How to Bullet Journal: Beginner's Guide

If you’ve landed on this page, it probably means that you have no idea what a bullet journal is, or maybe you are familiar with it but would like to learn more. If this is the case, you’ve come to the right place.

When I first discovered bullet journaling, I was both intrigued and somewhat confused. I found numerous examples of how a bullet journal spread looked like. However, it was more challenging to find useful articles which detailed just exactly what a bullet journal system was. I found it really difficult to figure out what all the different components of a bullet journal were, and how they all worked together in relation to one another.

One of the questions I get asked regularly on social media is ‘How do I start a bullet journal?’ Since picking up this system, I have a real passion for it and I love encouraging others to give it a try. But when it comes to a bullet journal, there is just so much to talk about. So much so, I felt that rather than skim through this topic and compress it into one long epic post, I’d start a beginners guide to Bullet Journal series instead.

What is a Bullet Journal guide. Weekly layout

This will allow me space and freedom to really flesh out the system and give you a better understanding of what exactly this system is all about. It will be the ultimate step-by-step guide to starting your first bullet journal. I’m confident to say that by the end of the series, you will walk away having a clearer understanding of the system and enough confidence to begin your own.

When it comes to a bullet journal, there is just so much to talk about!

I started bullet journaling back in July 2017, so I am by no means an expert (you can read a little more about how I got started HERE). I’ve really enjoyed adopting this system into my daily life. In this short period of time, I’ve learnt so many different things, sometimes from people, and other times through pure trial and error. I’ve since developed my own style of bullet journaling (you can check out all the spreads I’ve created HERE).

Beginner's Bullet Journal Guide

I hope to share with you the way that I interpret the bullet journal system. This as only my opinion and one way of bullet journaling, as there are so many different ways and opinions on how you can do it. That’s the beauty of a bullet journal, you can really make it unique and specifically your own.

I’m going to assume that we are all beginners here, so I will create this guide with this fact in mind. The series will consist of 5 parts, as outlined below. Each part will be posted once a week and once posted, I will link the new article and change the heading colour to purple. By the end of 5 weeks, all the articles will be posted, linked, and all the headings will be coloured purple. Hopefully by the end of this series, you should be a bullet journal pro and have enough courage to finally take the plunge and start your own!

Are you ready? Let’s get started.

  1. Love love love your work!! There seems to be no wrong in all that you do which makes me a little a jealous hehhe. Keep it up and so glad that you’ve started blogging so that you can be more in depth with people like me

  2. Your artwork and organization is amazing! I tend to stick to something more minimal as I cannot draw stick figures! Thank you!

  3. I think it’s important to remember that your journals don’t actually have to look as amazing as the ones you see on the internet do (like the one in this post). When you see all these amazing journals with these amazing drawings and perfect handwriting it can be kind of intimidating, but it really doesn’t matter how nice your journal looks. Just do it!
